How I use my Windows Mobile Phone Part 3

In previous postings I have shown you how I use my Samsung Omnia to make the best use of both my unlimited internet and my phone. So far I have been getting some more apps that I find useful. Today I will  give you some more apps that I got a hold off and I have been using for quite some time. Hence the parts 1 and 2 and so on.

When I think of buying a new phone I ask myself what will this phone do for me. Will it help me with my productivity, will it help me with my social networking or will it help me with my general usage. So what is in it for me? So far I see my phone as a computer away from home. I could access my school’s website most important site in the world on my phone. I could keep up to day with the news and I could listen to my radio, use my GPS, read QR-codes and even see the weather.

Adobe Reader and Notes:

These apps not only help with the viewing of documents. I could get an email with a PDF file and I could view it right then and there and even fill out the app if required and fax or email it back to the recipient. Notes comes in handy when making calls to take down a number or confirmation number you use notes and it shows you information on the call you made. Therefore it helps with taking notes on a call.

Weatherbug, Google Maps, I-Nigma:

With these three apps one could find different things to do with them. I do not use weather bug but I’ve tried it. It gives you an up today reading on the temperature, which is very handy I should say. Google Maps or Google Latitude with the use of an unlocked GPS is great. I could update my location and even get directions to another location. It does not give turn by turn but it is useful. For those of you who do not know what a QR-code is many Japanese are using it and most of their phones come equipped to read QR-codes. It is not very social media friendly but I love just using it to reader or go to a website without having to type.

Podcast and RSS Reader:

These are also useful to listen to your favorite podcasts and to catch up on the news. There are a variety of readers and players out there. Remember Google is your best friend when looking up things like these. This is harvesting the full potential  of your phone, it may not be an iPhone but it can do a lot. If you use Google reader you could actually include some of your favorite sites to your phone reader on the go.

Office 2010

Yay!!! Its about time actually, and I did well by waiting as I did not get the leaked version on a torrent site. I can say I wanted it to be legit!

I am talking about the Microsoft Technical Preview of the Office 2010 that will be coming out soon. I have been a beta tester for Microsoft for about 6 years now and I love it. It is fun just trying new things and seeing all of the bugs, and sending feedback. So far I have not started my paper so I have not done much typing in it. What I have done is some copying and pasting since I was modifying some documents earlier.

The Installation process:

image image image

Simple and quick the process took about 3 minutes tops for me.

A look around:

I stated earlier that I did not have much to do on it since I am procrastinating on my paper, but that does not mean I did not take a look around at the menus.

    image

The eye candy feature of office 2007 is not there anymore, for those of you who have office 2007 notice that big candy globe for the office button is not longer there.  I find it a little bit cleaner and lighter, maybe its just me.

image

So this is the menu after clicking on the office button. everything is aligned on the left and hand and you have a variety of options right there. Point 1 for accessibility!

image image image image

One other thing I tried was the copy and paste and I have to say having three kinds of copy and paste option is kinda nice. Also you can see a preview of how your paste will look before hitting accept.

paste

As I continue to test I will try to give more information on any bugs or even something new with office 2010. As usual it is able to save documents in compatibility mode and could read all documents from its predecessors. So far this version seems to have more options making it a little more accessible.

Flashing to a new ROM

I recently flashed my back to the Windows Mobile 6.5 cooked ROM and I am very satisfied right now. I have to say much improvements in terms of memory and even so battery life. I first flashed my phone to unlock the GPS which Verizon (greedy) Wireless decided to lock. It was so easy I am now flashing my phone like there is no tomorrow every time a new update comes out. You could do the same with any Windows Mobile phone but I will tell you the Omnia is the easiest one I came across so far. Correct me if I am wrong.

Before:

After:

                                                  image    image   image

After Flashing I now have a lot of space that I could easily install any program that I want to test plus, it runs faster so no more freezing up. I am so digging this theme but he has more out and I might to test them for now I am settling for that theme until the chef cooks another. May just maybe I might try my hand at making my own ROM who knows.

My Programs:

Disclaimer:

Flashing is not advisable and should be only done by someone who knows what they are doing. There is a great  tendency for your phone to be bricked. Bricked meaning beyond repair. So do it wisely.

Try seeking help from forums and read up a lot before attempting. Also the ROMs are not 100% stable as lockups could be experienced.

How I use my Windows Mobile Phone Part 2

Yesterday I showed you a few of the apps that I am using on my Windows Mobile phone and how handy they are to me. I have a few more to show you. These are some of the apps I use either for social networking, instant messaging and surfing the web.

Facebook and Pocket Twit:

These two apps are my saviors if you get my drift. The Facebook app is nowhere close to the iPhone app but it is still good. I could still update my status and comment on other people’s status and I have to say it is coming on rather nicely. I am sure the next app will have some improvements. Pocket Twit an amazing twitter app. You could view the links sent in tweets you could DM, Retweet, Reply and update your status. You could also do twitpics and even shorten your links. It is just amazing app all around. If you have a Windows Mobile phone and you tweet try Pocket Twit sometime.

Skyfire and Opera Mobile Beta:

With Skyfire you could experience the web on your mobile device with a desktop kick to it. You could view your YouTube videos within the browser with no extra apps to open. In short it handles flash well. You could view almost every webpage on the web. The almost meaning sites like my school are not compatible, with Skyfire. With the Opera browser the experience is similar yet a bit low keyed as the certain pages are automatically shown in the mobile version and the flash is not really working. Well it does but it has to open another app to play Youtube videos. Overall it is a very good mobile browser, if your phone is unable to use Skyfire Opera might be best for you.

Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Agile Messenger, Palringo and Fring:

Ok long list. These are the 5 apps that I use for my web messengers. I have choices as at times I do get tired of the way one works so I can easily switch over to another app. So far I am loving the Palringo application it is very consistent and it shows me my offline messages, which is a plus a big plus. I am in love with Skype both the desktop version and the mobile version. You could use it simultaneous and you won’t miss a message. The big plus is that you could also make Skype calls making perfect use of that unlimited data. Agile Messenger is a paid application I only got it to test, it is the same as all multi-messengers it does voice clips and you could send pictures. Windows Live messenger if you want to keep the love of Msn Messenger this is the app for you, you could view your contacts display pictures and it is quite easy to use. All of the sounds of WLM on your phone. Fring ah yes this tiny application packs a huge punch, so you do not want to open all of these apps to update your status Fring will do that for you.

Pandora:

This is a great app for playing you online tunes from your favorite radio stations. The GUI leaves much to be desired but it works and that is all that matters to me. To find the .cab search the web its there waiting for you.

You may not be interested in all of these but that will give you an idea of what you may want on your phone if you ever own one.

How I use my Windows Mobile Phone Part 1

Many people own a Smartphone and not many own a Windows Mobile phone. For the few who do some are having a hard time getting things to work as they want them too. Some of the major complaints one might hear is the UI and programs are just not user friendly. Or they keep on getting issues such as battery power drainage or they just got a bad phone period. My very first Smartphone was a Treo 750 I used to love it until due to AT&T’s crappy network all of my calls were being dropped. So I then moved over to the HTC Kaiser which is an awesome phone. Touch screen, GPS, and could hold up to 32 GB of expanded memory, not that 32GB is available right now. Currently I now own a Samsung Omnia i910 and I have to say I am quite satisfied with it. It’s no iPhone but it does a lot for me and I consider it my computer away from home.

Today what I am going to show you is how I use my phone and some useful apps that you could find all over the web. Programs that will give you  the full experience of both your unlimited data plan and the  phone itself. There are not many apps out there  like the iPhone… and to get that kind of  experience I got the touch instead :P . Back to the Windows Mobile phone, even with less apps it is still a great phone and I have found quite a few programs that are very useful.

My Mobiler :

My Mobiler is an app that enables you to connect your WinMO phone to the computer. It gives one the ability to use their keyboard and mouse to send text messages and to write notes, best of all the screen shots. Go ahead give it a try link.image

Clear Temp:

Like every computer a phone has cache and some cookie savers that could somewhat slow down your phone after some heavy surfing if you know what I mean. From using apps that take up some memory, looking at links from your pocket twit app, to watching YouTube videos all of those activities create useless memory usage. That is where Clear Temp comes in handy. This little app basically removes all unnecessary things that are cluttering your system. Give Clear Temp a try.

image

Internet Sharing:

Do I dare mention the Internet Sharing application that comes in very handy when there is no free network around? Ok I guess I will mention it. The internet sharing app is a god-send not only does it give me the ability to share the internet via Bluetooth pan or USB I can assure you that its fast. That is why I love my mobile phone, tethering is a breeze I have been doing it for 3 years if you catch my drift ;) . Some phone companies actually leave this application installed while others like Verizon Wireless remove it. You do know of course that there is a hookup somewhere to get it back :Dimage

Gmail Application :

Many Windows Mobile phone come with the capability to install Java based apps. The Omnia however is another story and so I searched for an app which would allow me to install Gmail on my phone. Yeah I could use the Microsoft email app but I am used to my Gmail.

gmail

Searching online forums will help there is so much information out there. I am happy with it as I have an almost desktop like experience with my Gmail. Search for the pack GC Java Pack.

PMRecorder:

If you think that you are going to call me and blackmail me I have news for you, this call is being recorded for quality assurance and for saving my butt if you try anything mister. This app comes in very handy. No I do not use it all the time only for certain important calls where people put you under the bus because they get into trouble that is my life saver.

image

Microsoft My Phone:

If you are like me one who loves to flash their phone with a new cooked rom then this application is for you. In terms of being free, it has the capability to sync text, contacts, photos and other important information that you may have on your phone. I do not use it to sync my contacts instead I use Google Sync which syncs my calendar and contacts on Google Voice, my Google Calender and if I have another phone it will sync to that one as well. They are very handy keep them in mind. You will never have to worry about losing a contact again.

image

So these are some of the applications on my phone for now. More to come later as everyday I am finding something new. I hope you found the list helpful for some of the apps. Remember Google is your best friend whenever you have a problem, or you need a program. He is always there to make your day.
